Bell Ringing Terms
- Ring
- Ring bell - often used following another technique, such as pluck
- Pluck
- Lay the bell on the foam and lift the clapper and let it drop.
- Thumb Damp
- With a glove on lay your thumb on the bell as you shake it
- Martellato
- Hit the bell into the foam from a height of about 4 inches
- Tie
- Ring the first note but do not ring the second, letting the sound continue through the value of both notes.
- Shake
- Shake the bell so that the clapper rapidly and repeatedly re-strikes both sides of the bell.
- Let Vibrate (LV)
- Let bells vibrate or continue to sound without damping, disregarding note values and rests.
- Damp
- Damp all bells sounding.
- Tower Swing or Toll
- Ring bell in normal way, then swing it at the side of your
body in the direction the arrows indicate.

- suspended mallet, hold bell up by handle and strike bell
with a mallet
