Techniques in Bell Ringing

Bell Ringing Terms

Ring
Ring bell - often used following another technique, such as pluck
Pluck
Lay the bell on the foam and lift the clapper and let it drop.
Thumb Damp
With a glove on lay your thumb on the bell as you shake it
Martellato
Hit the bell into the foam from a height of about 4 inches
Tie
Ring the first note but do not ring the second, letting the sound continue through the value of both notes.
Shake
Shake the bell so that the clapper rapidly and repeatedly re-strikes both sides of the bell.
Let Vibrate (LV)
Let bells vibrate or continue to sound without damping, disregarding note values and rests.
Damp
Damp all bells sounding.
Tower Swing or Toll
Ring bell in normal way, then swing it at the side of your body in the direction the arrows indicate.
Mal or +
suspended mallet, hold bell up by handle and strike bell with a mallet
